What Churches Can Do

What Churches Can Do

OK. Here is a sticky area.  Churches are often innundated with requests from strangers to give to missions projects.  It can feel like everybody has their hand out.

The biblical model is probably more two entities working together to accomplish the purpose for the glory of God. John 17:21 ...one... that the world may know... Galatians 5:13 ...by love serve one another...

What is it that the church cannot do without a missionary? What is it that a missionary cannot do without the Christians in the churches?  One answer is: reach people who have no other hope of hearing about Jesus.

The local gathering of Christians will not see people in remote parts of the world come to faith in Christ unless they have a part in sending someone to tell them. The missionary cannot go tell people who have not heard of Christ and less the church has a part in sending them to do it.

The missionaryMissionary when I see you through this labor and less there is a team behind him enabling him to the conference that work. The church will not see the fruit of their labor in there they're giving unless there's a representative of that body who can come back and tell them about what God is doing in far away

places.

As Mr. immobilizes we are seeking that kind of a servant relationship with the church body.

Churches often provide opportunities to missionaries in two ways:

1) Direct support:  as a church body under a missions committee or other church leadership.

2) Indirect support. Opportunities to initiate contact with individuals within the church whom God has preparing for action in missions.

Here are some ideas of how a church might help:

  1. Encourage missionary interaction with the church body. Ministry is about engaging individuals to work within a team. Imparting vision and opportunity to individuals is a key part of team building. Set parameters or boundaries if necessary. Give the missionary feedback. What is obvious to you in your local culture may escape the missionary's notice
  2. Provide public speaking opportunities with multiple groups. These allow missionaries to inform people about the unreached tribes, inspire them through testimonies of what God is doing and invite response. Presentations may open doors to speak to individuals whom God is preparing to accomplish His purposes.
  3. Permission to wisely engage individual leaders about opportunities. Youth leaders about Wayumi or NTBI. Young adult leaders or small group leaders about preparing people for full time ministry, evangelism, discipleship, short term projects. The objective is to avoid the appearance of subversive behavior by working alongside of local church leadership.
  4. Recurring periodic invitations to speak to gatherings of any age or size. (Building relationships over time.)
  5. Opportunity to put up a display table in a gathering place periodically to engage the body about unreached tribes.
  6. Invitations to missions conferences or missions planning meetings.
  7. Take the time to promote Wayumi in your church.
  8. Lay a solid foundation for a faith centered in Christ alone. See Building on Firm Foundations Vol 1)
  9. Set up a culture of discipleship within the body so that every person knows the vision, the purpose, the path and the destination. ...The destination being close intimate fellowship with the living God through the maturing walk of faith and obedience.
  10. Ultimately we would like to develop a team spirit or partnership where we are mutually contributing our resources, gifts insights and experience in tandem, as the Lord leads and provides, to build faith in Christ both locally and abroad. People tend to look at missions as a spectator sport with an admission fee rather than a body function since the beginning of the church. Sharing truth in the context of relationships can overcome misconceptions.
